How To Stop Water Damage Started By Leak

There are various causes of water damage .such as leak, clogged drains and building problems. But the mainly vital and hazardous causes of water damage is leak. A busted supply line/leaky pipe, a leaky roof, overflow of water from a sink or bath tub, and the break down of a machine that carries water are some factors. There are two types of leaky pipes, one that drips gradually and/or only when water is passing through the pipe and one that produces a constant spray of water. Leaks that occur only when water flows through the pipe are hard to detect because the water has a chance of drying. There are some tips to be followed to decrease water damage caused by leak.

The initial and very vital step to begin when you see a leak is to shut off the water. If turning off the water on the machine that is leaking doesn’t work, or you’re not sure where the water is leaking from, and then shut off the major water valve. It should be situated where cold water enters your home, inside in colder climates and outside in warmer climates.

The extremely vital step after turning off the water wash up the mess caused by water leakage. As soon as you have turned off the water, the leak will need to be cleaned up. You should remove as much water as you can with a mop, towels, or rags until there is no water evident in the leak area. This needs to be done as soon as is probable because water can soak into floors, ceilings, and walls very rapidly.

After removing and extracting water with the help of mop, towel and rage you must ventilate the damaged area. Because it is vital for dry up process. Open all doors and windows around the home to let some air flow through. You can also put some stand-up or sitting fans in front of the leak area for a few hours to make sure it’s all dry.

After taking some vital care steps you must look around to make sure no other area is affected. Water has a way of getting around without being seen. If the leak happened upstairs, go downstairs and verify your ceilings and walls.

The most vital step to avert water damage is to install a water leak detection system. This system will Pdetect a leak in your house and will alert you. This system will save your thousands of dollars. Some systems even shut off all the water in your house automatically when a leak is detected, giving you peace of mind when you’re away from house.

After doing all this you must contact a water damage restoration experts to come and take a look at the effected area. If the leak was little and simple to control there is no need, but if the leak was large and may have sunk into the floors or walls then it is vital to make sure damage isn’t still being done to your house.

Getting Flood Insurance - Essential Information and Guide

Getting Flood Insurance - Essential Information and Guide

Do you live in an area that is likely to affected by flood? If yes, then you need to purchase flood insurance. This is a requirement from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA).

It is true that people who live in a relatively dry climate are still victims of flood. At this point, it is important to buy a flood policy to cover damages that may result from storms, melting snow, inadequate or overloaded drains, or hurricanes.

The regular home insurance deal does not cover your home and properties from water damages. Statistics reveal that about twenty five percent of flood cover claims are registered from people that have low to moderate risk of flooding. Please note that you cannot add flood cover as a floater to your home insurance policy. You must buy this coverage specially from an insurer associated with the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP). This coverage can be purchased at any time as long as you reside in a community that participates with NFIP; unless the risk of a flood is imminent. Note that there’s a 30-day waiting time before flood insurance becomes active.

It is important you know that flood policies do not protect you from damage arising from high winds or hail.

You can choose to buy add-ons to your normal homeowners’ policy to get protection for those perils. It is not in all cases that flood protection will provide cover for flood-related accidents. Flood cover has been proven to be the best way of protecting your basement should there be a flood. Home items like furnaces, hot water steamers, stairways and some appliances (like clothes washers, dryers, and freezers) are usually included in the coverage. On the other hand, some properties, floors, walls and ceilings are excluded.

Flood Prevention: Protect Your Home

looding does not just occur outside the house or when it rains. It also occurs inside the house because of the following reason:

1. A leaking pipe. It is recommended to have a daily inspection of your pipes to see if there are any leakages.

2. Check the kitchen area. If your refrigerator has an ice maker, double check the hose if to make sure if it is securely attached to its connection. Check the sink pipes for any leakages.

3. The bathroom pipes. Check the shower and bathtub for any discoloration and molds. This indicates that there is a leaking pipe. Also check the sinks and toilets. The toilets can be clogged due to some reasons like too much tissue paper being thrown in the bowl and other inappropriate things that can cause the toilet to overflow.

4. Utility room. Always check your water heating and cooling system. Washing machines are a culprit too, so check the hoses if it is damaged or not.

5. Leaking roof, gutters, and drainage are also the major cause of flooding inside the house.

6. Cracks and gaps on window and doors. Water can come in through these gaps and cracks.

Flooding can also be caused by the natural way.

1. River Flooding - occurs when the river basin overflows due to melted ice, rainfall, and storms.

2. Coastal Flooding - occurs when there’s a tropical storm and tidal waves.

3. Urban Flooding - occurs when a land or soil loses its ability to absorb water.

4. Flash Flooding - occurs when there’s a heavy rainfall coupled with intensity and duration. It also occurs when a dam overflows.

When there is a flood inside the house for whatever reason, find the source. If a leaking pipe is the problem, turn off your main water valve. Then, call a 24/7 flood restoration company as soon as you can. If you do not act on it quickly, the standing water can damage your floorings and carpets. It can even damage your furniture.

Basement Waterproofing

A basement is designed to add storage space as well as living space. So it is a desirable addition to a home. However, basements are the most likely to flood as they are closed in areas and sits at the lowest part of your home. A moist basement can be caused by any number of problems, including lack of waterproofing. The most common cause is something called hydrostatic pressure. It is a term for the soil that absorbs water and retains it. Another common cause of a wet basement is a heavy rain. In this case the soil can become oversaturated with moisture and then your basement can become flooded. Sometimes a careless man will not notice his broken pipes until it comes to a leaking business. When a wet basement occurs, it will become a major problem. A damp basement can add to humidity throughout the house and promote allergic discomfort. It also creates a perfect environment for the termite activity. As a homeowner, you should beware that properly waterproofing your basement is an important part of protecting against flooding so that you can have a healthier home environment for your family. There are several simple things you can do by yourself even without professionals. When it comes to basement waterproofing methods, using waterproofing paints is one of the cheapest options. While it is quite cheap, it is not always the best choice as the paint does not last very long. Another basement waterproofing you may hear about is using black tar. But it has the same disadvantage with using waterproofing paints. A better choice is rubberized membranes. You can use a sprayer, or a roller to apply the membranes. It is easy to do yourself. One of the more expensive basement waterproofing methods is the exterior foundation drains. They are installed around the foundation and help any water to be diverted away. This method is an extremely effective and good choice for those who live in the area where it rains a lot. While it is a bit more expensive than some of the other methods. Once you have a proper basement waterproofing, you will enjoy an increased living space and have a more comfortable home.

How to Dry Flooded Basements

How to Dry Flooded Basements

Opening the door to your basement only to see your new downstairs swimming pool is never fun. However, now is not the time to sulk, you need to take quick steps in order to save your home from possible thousands in water damage. To help our readers wondering just how to dry out a flooded basement, we have created the following entry.

Prep Work:

When dealing with floodwater, you should always turn off the electricity first. Then, before you can remove the water, you need to take all items on the basement floor and put them up on shelves, or out of the room entirely. If there is any chance of sewage water intermingled with the floodwater, you should properly gear up in gloves, boots, and a facemask. Keep children and pets away from the floodwater while you are working.

Ascertain the Damage:

The first step to drying a flooded basement is ascertaining the damage. In some cases, the flooding is mild and requires no more than a mop and a few fans. However, if the water in your basement covers the whole floor you will need to act quickly to get it out as quickly as possible.

Extract Water:

Several problems can occur from water damage in your home, which is why getting the water out of your basement ASAP is so important. Depending on the amount of water, you will want to choose from several extraction methods.

Extraction Tools:

If you have a sump pump installed that did not full work, you could connect a hose to the pump and lead it out of the home to extract the remaining water. Another method would be to use a wet vac, which is much like a regular vacuum but intended for use with liquids, and does not run the risk of electrocution. This method works fine, but the vac will need to be emptied often, which makes it inconvenient. If the flooding is too major for this equipment, it may be in your best interest to call a water damage specialist to extract that water quickly and efficiently.

Ventilate:

Open up any doors or windows in the room and house, to get a steady airflow going. You will want to do this as soon as possible, in order to get the room as dry as possible.

Dry:

Once the water has been extracted, you will want to dry up any remaining water on the floor, and on the walls. Take dry rags or towels, and mop up what you can. This will make the drying process more streamlined. Then, find or borrow as many fans as you can and position them around the room. If you do not own fans, or have already called a water damage specialist to help handle extraction, those experts could also be commissioned for this task.

Future Prevention:

After doing this one time, you will probably be most interested in how to prevent it from happening again. The best way to prevent flooding in a basement is to install a sump pump to handle any flooding that may happen. Also, checking for leaks from the outside that may be letting the water in to the basement and sealing them off will help prevent future leaks.

The Process Of Sewage Cleanup

Posted by: dbeavers

Tagged in: Untagged

The Process Of Sewage Cleanup

Seeing sewage from a weather event or sewage backup is not a pretty sight. In fact, just looking at it will make you want to run. When the drainage lines get full, you get a backup of sewage from the nearest area.

Another things about sewers, especially those in urban areas, is that they have aged to the end of no return. Another reason for sewage backup is lack of regular maintenance with the septic systems. When it rains a lot, the soil can cause a sewer to back up and stop working.

When people are exposed to this toxic garbage, it can cause serious health risks. The water from the sewage has lots of bacteria and fungus because of all of the garbage that has been stopped up. If the sewage is not cleaned and removed, it can pose a serious danger to the people that live in that affected area.

There is also the risk of toxins, viruses and parasites within the sewage. Of course, it should be cleaned as soon as possible. However, this should be left up to experienced and trained technicians to do the sewage cleanup. A professional company will be able to conduct the sewage cleanup in a safe manner.

One of the first things that would have to be done is remove the sewage. The technicians have equipment that can take care of that. Then they would use antifungal and antimicrobial solutions. In addition to that, they would also use mildecide.

If the sewage affected the inside of your home, a dehumidifier would be used. They may have to use additional solutions to make sure the affected areas are properly sanitized. They want to make the home the way it was prior to the sewage backup.

Dealing With The Aftermath Of Flooding

Dealing With The Aftermath Of Flooding

Unseen by the naked eyes is an intruder that no one hopes to have to deal with in their home: mold. Unfortunately, it is also something that most homeowners or renters do not think about until it happens, and in some cases, it will have become a full-fledged problem that will be very costly to repair. If serious water damage can occur from something as minor as spilled water that is not cleaned up properly, then what would happen if there is a flood in your home that is caused by a leaking sink, faulty plumbing, or worse, a storm?

Local TV and radio stations will broadcast warnings over the airwaves, so take heed! Time is of the essence in this situation, and if you have the time, you need to do what you can to salvage as much of your belongings as quickly as possible. Everyone should have an emergency kit that should include some first-aid medical supplies, a flashlight, a few days’ worth of clothing for everyone in the family, important paperwork and documents, contact information of your family, friends, and insurance company, and food. In the meantime, you can prop up your furniture onto cinder blocks or other big, stackable items that are water-resistant so that the floodwater might not damage them. If you have two or more stories, carry what you can upstairs where the water might not reach.

After the storm is over and officials give the okay to return home, you will need to assess the damage that has been done. If there is minor flooding, the damage won’t be as bad, and you might be able to save most of your belongings. First, you will need to remove any standing water in your home. With buckets and a broom, get the floors as dry as possible. Remove any and all furniture outside so they can dry and so they don’t contaminate your dry belongings. Floodwaters can sometimes bring in sewage water, which contains toxins, bacteria, viruses, and other contaminants, and until you can determine that this water did not come into your home, you must get any wet furniture outside.

Then you will need to call a local water damage restoration company as soon as possible. Moisture must be obliterated within 24-72 hours or else the mold can start to grow. If you wait any longer, that mold will start to thrive and spread rapidly, and it will end up costing more if you don’t have insurance.

While you are waiting for the restoration company to arrive, you need to reduce the amount of moisture and humidity in your home as much as possible. Plug in dehumidifiers, turn on fans and air conditioners, open up your windows, and wipe down the walls and floors to help eliminate this excess moisture. The restoration team will have all the right equipment to restore your home to its previous condition. Whether your floor is covered with carpet or has hardwood flooring, they have a machine that acts like a vacuum and will suck every last bit of moisture from it. Walls will also be dried and treated so mold will not grow.

The Cost of not having Flood Insurance

Posted by: dbeavers

The Cost of not having Flood Insurance

When looking at how much flood insurance costs, first and foremost, you should weigh the potential cost against how much it would cost you to go without insurance. The difference would be huge. There are few of us who could afford to underwrite the cost of rebuilding out of our own pockets should we lose our home and possessions to a flood. That is why you carry flood insurance; it helps with the cost of starting over if you are the unfortunate victim of a devastating flood.

How much flood insurance costs vary widely depending on where you live. If where you live is at little or no risk for flooding, your flood insurance rates will be much less than if where you live is at high risk for such things as hurricanes or flash flooding. According to many surveys, as of 2009, flood insurance premiums cost anywhere from just under $350 per year to more than $3,000, depending on the predetermined flood risk for where you live. While some will see this cost as being way more than they can take on, you should consider the fact that you couldn’t possibly rebuild your home if it were destroyed by flood for anywhere near the upper limits of the flood insurance spectrum.

Remember, the cost of flood insurance is determined by how much of a risk your home or business is for flooding. For the best rates possible on flood insurance, you should try to buy your flood insurance through the National Flood Insurance Program — see an approved agent today. The NFIP was created to make sure that everyone who owns a home would have a means of getting flood insurance at a price they can afford. The federal government determines and regulates the rates, so any agent taking part in the National Flood Insurance Program should quote you the exact same cost. You must also take into consideration the fact that the NFIP program has upper limits on its payout that will not meet full replacement coverage in many areas, so you may wish to get excess flood insurance.

While flood insurance is not necessary for everyone who owns a home, it is an invaluable asset should the unthinkable occur and your home is caught in a devastating flood. The National Flood Insurance Program was created by the federal government for exactly this reason: to make sure that all homeowners have access to flood insurance that they could afford. Do not allow yourself to be counted among those who lose everything to a flood — protect yourself, your home, and your possessions. Loss of everything by flood happens much more often than you might think.

Preparing Yourself for a Flood

Posted by: dbeavers

Preparing Yourself for a Flood

There are all kinds of floods, ranging from floods of biblical proportions to simple water hose leaks. You need to make your preparations even before any flooding occurs.

If the flooding is caused by a weather event, get in touch with the local agency to find out if your house is located in a flood zone. Discover what your local warning signals will be. Be aware of designated evacuation and transportation routes as well as emergency shelters. Practice flood evacuation routes with family members, and designate a contact person who lives elsewhere in case separation occurs. Every member of the family must be aware of the contact person’s information. For those with multiple-story homes, place expensive or precious belongings on the upper story to avoid damage from flooding. Your car’s fuel tank should be kept filled.

Get ready by gathering emergency gear for your house. Supplies you will need are a radio that runs on batteries along with back-up batteries, and plenty of flashlights. Keep food items that won’t spoil and a manual can opener on hand along with drinkable water supplies at one gallon per day per person for up to 5 days. Those who are pet owners must prepare for them as well.

Get together a first-aid kit which contains all your regular prescriptions. Get a water-proof container to store your vital documentation such as medical and insurance forms and IDs. Collect your personal hygiene equipment as well as handi-wipes or baby wipes in case you can’t take a bath.

In case a flood watch or warning has been issued, keep tuned to local tv and radio stations for further alerts. Find the location of your main power source for utilities and know how to turn it off in case you need to evacuate or in case it floods.

Should the need for evacuation occur, keep in mind this FEMA tip and never try walking in rushing water. A person is liable to fall in just a half foot of moving water. Hold a stick ahead of you to determine if the ground is sufficiently firm. Avoid driving your car in standing water since this can submerge the base of your car and lead to stalling or lack of handling. Cars can float in only 12″ of water, and SUVs can be swept away by just 2 feet of moving water. Besides the danger of stalling, your vehicle’s exhaust pipe could be submerged, which will result in deadly carbon monoxide filling the car.

How to Clean and Disinfect Mold Damaged Furniture

How to Clean and Disinfect Mold Damaged Furniture

Finding mold on one of your furniture pieces can induce a drop in your stomach and almost instant regret that you did not catch it sooner. While you may be thinking this is the end of THAT piece, don’t e so sure. Many pieces of furniture, both upholstered and wooden, can be salvaged with the appropriate steps. To help guide our readers through this process, we have provided the following tips.

1. Move Outdoors

Since you are cleaning potentially harmful spores off of your furniture, you will not want to be scrubbing them off in to your own home. The best first step is to move any and all furniture you are cleaning outdoors, to an area that can be easily hosed off or cleaned. If you are cleaning in the grass, put down a tarp to protect your lawn from the cleaning chemicals. If the weather is humid or wet, you will need to find a safe place indoors instead. Just be sure the area you choose is easily cleanable and well ventilated.

2. Analyze the Damage

Before you start the cleaning, make sure the furniture can be saved. The first rule is that the damage must be recent. If the water and mold has been sitting on the furniture for weeks or months, the hazards of keeping the furniture increase. You may also want to open a part of the damaged furniture at the seam to see if the mold goes beneath the outer upholstery. If the damage has spread to the stuffing, it will need to be thoroughly scrubbed and completely re-stuffed. If your furniture is made of wood, damage should be apparent and easy to detect. Any wood rotting away is a definite sign to throw that piece out.

3. Protect Yourself

Whenever dealing with water or flood damage of any kind, you should always be wearing protective gear. For this chore, you should have a minimum of long gloves, a mask, and long-sleeved clothes that can be washed in heat. Never take risks when it comes to cleaning or touching mold.

4. Brush Away Debris

If there is visible mold caked on to the furniture, you will need to brush off as much as you can first. Use a hard, bristly brush for the task which can be sterilized or thrown out after the task. Brush away the mold, and rinse the brush in a bucket of hot water and a powerful cleaning agent between strokes (note: test all cleaning agents on your furniture surface before using, to reduce the risk of bleach spots). For wooden pieces, a brush is probably not necessary. Use a thick rag or soft scrubber to buff away the mold instead.

5. Clean Off Remainder

After brushing away any and all mold debris, you will want to disinfect the area in case of the possibility of spores’ unseen. As stated before, before to test any cleaners on your surface before using for the possibility of discoloration or distortion. Concentrated bleach mixed with water is used often in mold cleaning, but most fabrics will be discolored by it. Finding color-safe bleach is a good replacement, but they also make cleaners made especially for upholstery cleaning, which would also work. Wooden pieces can be sanitized with a clean rag and alcohol. Discoloration may be hard to avoid, but spots affected can always be sanded and re-stained.

6. Rinse, Dry

After letting scrubbing and rinsing the cleaner, you will want to let the newly clean furniture dry in the sun. If the weather is not holding up, put the furniture in a dry place with as many fans as you can round up to dry efficiently.
