Getting Flood Insurance - Essential Information and Guide

Do you live in an area that is likely to affected by flood? If yes, then you need to purchase flood insurance. This is a requirement from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA).

It is true that people who live in a relatively dry climate are still victims of flood. At this point, it is important to buy a flood policy to cover damages that may result from storms, melting snow, inadequate or overloaded drains, or hurricanes.

The regular home insurance deal does not cover your home and properties from water damages. Statistics reveal that about twenty five percent of flood cover claims are registered from people that have low to moderate risk of flooding. Please note that you cannot add flood cover as a floater to your home insurance policy. You must buy this coverage specially from an insurer associated with the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP). This coverage can be purchased at any time as long as you reside in a community that participates with NFIP; unless the risk of a flood is imminent. Note that there’s a 30-day waiting time before flood insurance becomes active.

It is important you know that flood policies do not protect you from damage arising from high winds or hail.

You can choose to buy add-ons to your normal homeowners’ policy to get protection for those perils. It is not in all cases that flood protection will provide cover for flood-related accidents. Flood cover has been proven to be the best way of protecting your basement should there be a flood. Home items like furnaces, hot water steamers, stairways and some appliances (like clothes washers, dryers, and freezers) are usually included in the coverage. On the other hand, some properties, floors, walls and ceilings are excluded.
